As part of the Solid Leaders Programme, our cohort had the privilege of visiting one of the most ambitious infrastructure projects in the region — the new runway and control tower development at Kuwait International Airport.
The visit was designed to bring leadership theory into sharp, real-world focus. And it did exactly that.
We were welcomed by three exceptional leaders from the British Company Mott Macdonald at the heart of the project:
-
Patrick Jones – Project Director
-
Graham Kenny – Project Manager
-
Dimitrios Panagiotopoulos – Territory Manager
Together, they offered a candid and insightful perspective on what it truly means to lead large, complex, high-stakes projects.
Leading at Scale: Vision, Precision and Accountability
Patrick Jones opened the session by outlining the strategic vision behind the runway and tower expansion. Major aviation infrastructure projects are not simply construction challenges — they are national commitments, tied to economic growth, safety, and global connectivity.
He spoke about:
Aligning hundreds of stakeholders behind a shared purpose
Maintaining clarity of direction in a constantly evolving environment
Holding firm to standards while adapting to real-world constraints
His message was clear: Leadership at scale requires absolute clarity of vision and disciplined execution.
An Engaged and Curious Audience
What made the session truly powerful was the level of engagement from the Solid Leaders participants.
The Q&A was dynamic and wide-ranging, covering topics such as:
Handling pressure in high-visibility national projects
Maintaining morale during long project timelines
Dealing with setbacks and unexpected challenges
Personal leadership resilience
The discussion was energetic, thoughtful and reflective — exactly what we aim to create in the Solid Leaders Programme.
