Have you ever been in a meeting when an employee just “lost” it and either went on a tirade or got up and slammed out of the room?Anger is a universal experience. Dogs get angry, bees get angry, and so do humans. You don’t have to be a psychologist to know that managing anger productively is something few individuals, organisations, and societies do well. Yet research tells us that those who do manage their anger at work are much more successful than those who don’t.

If you ever have encountered an employee who has a burst of anger at work, you understand the impact of those behaviours and the ripple effect it has on the entire organization. Employees tip toe around these people to avoid these uncomfortable incidents.

There can be a fine line between someone being angry and showing strong emotions and someone crossing the line and potentially causing harm to another person.  Employees need to understand that everyone is expected to act and communicate in a professional, nonthreatening way.

As employers, we are responsible to provide a safe work environment, control the behaviours of our employees and teach them how to respond if they encounter belligerence in the workplace.

At Churchill Square Consulting we offer an Anger Management: Understanding Anger course which can be delivered in a one day workshop or alternatively by distance learning. On the course we teach teach participants how to:

o   Recognize how anger affects your body, your mind, and your behavior.

o   Use the five-step method to break old patterns and replace them with a model for assertive anger.

o   Use an anger log to identify your hot buttons and triggers.

o   Control your own emotions when faced with other peoples’ anger.

o   Identify ways to help other people safely manage some of their repressed or expressed anger.

o   Communicate with others in a constructive, assertive manner.

During the workshop you will spend the first part of the day getting to know participants and discussing what will take place during the workshop. Students will also have an opportunity to identify their personal learning objectives.

To begin the course, participants will consider what anger is and how it affects their lives, they will then learn about the cost of anger and pay-offs. Participants will learn how pain and trigger thoughts combine to cause anger. They will also explore their own trigger thoughts and about types of distorted thinking and how they can manage their thoughts and behaviour when they are angry. They will then learn about coping strategies and relaxation techniques to help them manage anger and how to minimize angry situations.

The British Association of Anger Management has accumulated some revealing statistics based on the UK:

    * 45% of UK adults regularly lose their temper at work

    * 33% of Britons are not on speaking terms with their neighbours

    * 1 in 20 have had a fight with the person living next door

    * UK airlines reported 1,486 significant or serious acts of air rage in a year a 59% increase over the previous year

    * More than 80% of UK drivers say they have been involved in road rage incidents

    * When facing computer problems, 50% of Britons have reacted by hitting their PC, hurling parts of it, screaming or abusing their colleagues

Anger isn’t just confined to the workplace, it is encountered in all aspects of life.
